Virginia State University shooting suspect found hiding in dorm closet

A 19-year-old man suspected in a shooting that injured five people at Virginia State University was apprehended after hiding in a dormitory closet for over 14 hours. Authorities located Camron Harris in Seward Hall on the VSU campus at 4 p.m. on Saturday, according to Lt. James Lamb of the local police.

The shooting occurred around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday. Harris, a resident of Henrico, Virginia, who is not enrolled at VSU, was taken to the Chesterfield County Jail. He faces four counts each of malicious wounding and using a firearm in the commission of a felony. Police stated he is being held without bond, and further charges are possible.

Upon arrival at the scene outside the campus dormitories, officers discovered five individuals with gunshot wounds. They were transported to local hospitals. One victim was reported in critical condition with life-threatening injuries, while the other four had non-life-threatening wounds. At least one of the victims was confirmed to be a 20-year-old student.

Virginia State University initially reported that "multiple suspects" were involved and placed the campus on lockdown. However, authorities later stated they did not believe there was an ongoing threat to the community after the shooting. The university acknowledged the concern among students, parents, and alumni, emphasizing that student safety and well-being remain their highest priority. The motive for the shooting is still under investigation.
