Virtual Taekwondo Joint Training Camp Held Ahead of Asian Games Debut

Athletes, referees, and officials are converging at the Taekwondo Won for a crucial joint training camp focused on Virtual Taekwondo. This event is a key preparation step for the sport's debut as an official medal event at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. The three-day camp, running from August 27th to 29th, is hosted by the World Taekwondo Federation (WT) and organized by the Taekwondo Promotion Foundation. It brings together approximately 30 participants from eight different countries, including eight of the sixteen athletes set to compete in the Asian Games, alongside four international referees. Virtual Taekwondo merges traditional taekwondo skills with cutting-edge virtual reality technology. Competitors wear VR headsets and motion sensors, engaging in matches within a virtual arena. The game format involves 60-second rounds, with matches decided by best-of-three, where the objective is to deplete the opponent's stamina gauge or have more stamina remaining. The Taekwondo Won was designated as the WT Virtual Taekwondo Central Training Center in February, solidifying its role in developing the sport. The Taekwondo Promotion Foundation and WT have also signed an agreement to enhance the international competitiveness and expand the reach of Virtual Taekwondo. Kim Joong-heon, Chairman of the Taekwondo Promotion Foundation, expressed the significance of hosting this training camp. He stated, "It is very meaningful that the joint training camp for Virtual Taekwondo, which has become an official sport in the Asian Games, is starting at the Taekwondo Won." He pledged the foundation's full support to ensure the Taekwondo Won leads the advancement of Virtual Taekwondo.
