Vladimir Putin Praises Moscow-Beijing Ties as a “Model for Relations Between States”

Vladimir Putin described Russia’s relationship with China as “a model for relations between states” during talks with Xi Jinping, as both leaders sought to present closer strategic coordination as a foundation for a broader international order.

The meeting also focused on the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, which Xi said should protect regional stability and promote development at a time of growing uncertainty and unpredictability. China said it was ready to work with Russia and other members on the organisation’s future development, long-term stability and role in promoting a multipolar world.

China is ready to work with all parties, including Russia, to discuss the organisation’s future development, help it achieve stable and long-term progress, strengthen the force leading reform of global governance, and promote a multipolar, equal and orderly world.

Xi said institutions in both countries were actively implementing initiatives discussed during Putin’s state visit to China in May, and that significant results had already been achieved. He added that joint efforts and strategic guidance from the two leaders would strengthen the relationship’s foundation, sustain its development and improve its prospects.

A model for relations between states.

During the May visit, Putin and Xi extended their 2001 Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation. They also signed documents on cooperation and issued joint statements on strategic coordination and a multipolar world.

The leaders discussed international and regional issues of mutual interest, although Beijing provided no further details. China has not condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and has called for negotiations to end the war, while insisting it is not a party to the conflict. Beijing has also rejected Western accusations that it supports Russia’s defense-industrial base. Putin and Xi have met face to face more than 40 times since 2013 and described their relationship as a “no limits” partnership in February 2022.
