Volcanic eruption in Indonesia keeps airports closed

The continuing eruption of Indonesia’s Anak Krakatau volcano has kept Jakarta’s two international airports closed and disrupted air travel across the country.

Authorities said the airports, including the major Soekarno-Hatta hub, would remain closed until at least Monday evening local time because of volcanic ash. The eruption continued to send smoke into the air.

Six smaller airports across the island nation had also been closed since the weekend. It remained unclear when they would reopen. More than 1,500 flights and about 170,000 passengers had been affected by the disruption.
