Volkswagen moves to cut 50,000 jobs in sweeping restructuring plan

Volkswagen is preparing one of its largest restructuring drives, with around 50,000 jobs potentially disappearing across its operations worldwide. The group’s supervisory board unanimously approved the plan, known as the “Future Plan,” as management seeks to raise productivity and cut costs.

The restructuring is designed to reorganize Volkswagen’s activities and its portfolio of brands. Management considers further workforce reductions necessary alongside previously adopted job-cutting programs, saying the measures are needed to meet the group’s financial and operational targets and preserve its competitive position in international markets.

The consequences may extend beyond employees. The future of some brands could also be affected as Volkswagen reviews its portfolio. The Spanish Seat marque has emerged as a particular focus of uncertainty.

German business magazine WirtschaftsWoche reported that the group could end Seat’s presence in the market by the end of 2029. That possibility forms part of the broader changes expected across Volkswagen’s brands.

The company faces difficult conditions shared by several major automakers, including slowing demand, high production costs and intensifying competition. Chinese companies have become major players in the electric-car market. Volkswagen is responding by betting on faster electrification and digitalization while reducing spending and improving operating efficiency.
