Volkswagen nears deal to produce military equipment for Israel, echoing Nazi past

In a move drawing historical parallels, German automotive giant Volkswagen is reportedly nearing an agreement to produce military equipment for Israel's defense sector. The deal, if finalized, would involve manufacturing components for advanced defense systems, including launch ramps and heavy-duty military trucks used in Israel's "Iron Dome" air defense system, at Volkswagen's factory in Osnabrück.

Sources close to the matter, cited by Bloomberg, indicate that negotiations between Volkswagen and the Israeli defense company Rafael Advanced Defense Systems are in their final stages. A formal agreement could be reached in the coming weeks, although discussions are ongoing and a final partnership has not yet been confirmed.

The proposed arrangement has faced scrutiny and opposition. Initially, the plan was reportedly blocked by Qatar's veto. To address concerns from Qatar's sovereign wealth fund and other objections, a potential "indirect formula" is being considered. Under this scenario, Volkswagen would transfer specific sections of the Osnabrück facility to the state of Lower Saxony, which would then establish a joint venture with Rafael, allowing Volkswagen to avoid direct collaboration.

This potential shift into defense manufacturing comes as Volkswagen grapples with significant internal challenges. The company is currently experiencing one of its deepest crises, marked by plans for job cuts and factory closures due to increased competition from Asia and underutilized production capacity. The Osnabrück plant, which currently produces Porsche models and the T-Roc Cabriolet, employs approximately 2,300 people. The company's supervisory board is scheduled to meet on September 4th to discuss restructuring plans, including the future of the Osnabrück factory.
