Volleyball: German and Italian teams set new world record for longest single set

In an astonishing display of endurance and skill, German and Italian volleyball players have etched their names in the record books by playing the longest and highest-scoring single set in international men's volleyball history. The FIPAV Cup match, held in Italy, saw the first set alone stretch for an incredible 89 minutes, concluding with Germany narrowly defeating Italy 66-64.

This marathon first set shattered the previous international record of 50-48, which was set just months earlier during the World Volleyball League. The sheer duration and point tally of this single set highlight an extraordinary level of competition, where neither team could establish a decisive lead. The rules, requiring a two-point advantage to win a set beyond the initial tie, led to a prolonged back-and-forth battle that saw scores climb past 30, 40, and even 50 points before reaching the final 130 combined points.

Remarkably, this record-breaking set was only the beginning of a fiercely contested match. After losing the grueling opener, Italy rallied to win the second set 25-22. Germany then took the third set 25-23, regaining the lead. However, Italy fought back once more, clinching the fourth set 25-22 to force a decisive fifth set.

Ultimately, Italy emerged victorious, winning the final set 15-12 after a total match time of 3 hours and 29 minutes. Italian player Daniele Lavia acknowledged the historic nature of the first set, describing it as "difficult and long." He expressed gratitude for the home crowd's support, stating, "Winning in front of so many spectators is exciting, they came for a great game, and it certainly turned into a great duel."
