Volvo launches new XC70 hybrid SUV with over 1,200 km range

Volvo has introduced its first mass-produced model based on the new SMA super hybrid architecture, the XC70 PHEV, in China. The Swedish automaker aims to bolster its competitiveness in the Chinese market, where it has been losing ground to joint venture brands focusing on new energy vehicles. The XC70 PHEV Extended Range, positioned between the XC60 and XC90 in Volvo's lineup, is designed to stand out with its substantial battery capacity and long driving range, directly challenging Chinese manufacturers who currently dominate this segment on price.

The XC70 features a design that balances Volvo's signature styling with aerodynamic efficiency. It measures 4,815 mm in length, 1,890 mm in width, and 1,650 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,895 mm, placing it at the upper end of the mid-size SUV category in China. The front boasts a closed grille with active air intakes, while the iconic "Thor's Hammer" headlights are updated with adaptive matrix LED technology. Notably, the vehicle omits the LiDAR sensor common on Chinese competitors, opting instead for an integrated camera and radar system as a cost-effective approach. The rear design retains Volvo's global aesthetic with vertical "Viking Axe" taillights.

Inside, the XC70 offers a high-tech cabin centered around a 15.4-inch central touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. A 92-inch augmented reality head-up display (AR-HUD) projects driving data and navigation onto the windshield. The infotainment system supports quad-zone voice recognition and AI-powered route planning, with wireless Apple CarPlay integration. For audio, it features a 23-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.

Performance-wise, the XC70 PHEV combines a 1.5-liter turbo gasoline hybrid engine with three electric motors (P1 + P2 + P4). Depending on the configuration, it produces between 234 kW and 340 kW (462 hp), enabling acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 5.3 seconds. Buyers can choose between a 21.2 kWh battery offering 116 km of pure electric range (CLTC standards) or a larger 39.6 kWh battery that provides 212 km of electric range and a combined range exceeding 1,200 km. Fast charging capabilities allow the battery to reach 80% capacity in about 23 minutes.
