VP Gibran Uses Motorcycle to Reach Earthquake Victims in Remote Area

Indonesian Vice President Gibran Rakabuming traveled by motorcycle to reach Kampung Waso in Manggarai Timur, East Nusa Tenggara, on Friday to directly assess the impact of a recent earthquake. The village, located in the Lamba Leda Utara sub-district, is among the areas affected by the disaster, and reaching it presented significant challenges due to its difficult terrain and access.

The Vice President's visit was intended to gain firsthand knowledge of the community's condition and their immediate needs for post-disaster management. Kampung Waso is serving as a temporary shelter for many displaced residents. During his visit, Gibran engaged in direct dialogue with the residents, listening to their concerns and ensuring that their basic needs would be addressed promptly.

One resident, Aisyah, shared her situation with the Vice President, who inquired about the status of her home's repair. Gibran assured her that temporary shelter would be provided. He also issued directives to the relevant agencies, urging them to accelerate the restoration of essential services. Key priorities include the swift establishment of an emergency hospital and the urgent repair of irrigation systems, places of worship, and educational facilities, some of which need to be rebuilt from scratch.

Manggarai Timur has been severely impacted by the series of tremors. Official figures indicate that 24 people have died, and over 19,800 individuals have been displaced to emergency shelters. Additionally, 9,647 homes have suffered severe damage, and 1,034 public and government facilities, including schools and places of worship, have also been affected.
