WAEC defends 2026 WASSCE results amid social media criticism

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has issued a defense of its 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results, addressing a recent wave of public commentary and criticism on social media. The examination body acknowledged the scrutiny, particularly from content creators and commentators, questioning the credibility of the released results.

WAEC stated that it welcomes constructive scrutiny but urged the public to disregard unverified claims and utilize its official channels for any concerns. The council emphasized that the 2026 WASSCE was conducted according to standard operating procedures and in cooperation with the Federal Ministry of Education. Social media discussions, amplified by posts gaining significant traction, alleged "disastrous glitches," especially affecting candidates who took the computer-based examination.

In its statement, signed by Moyosola Adesina, Head of Public Affairs, WAEC Nigeria, the council detailed its rigorous marking process. It explained that every candidate's script undergoes a multi-tiered system of marking, moderation, and auditing, guided by standardized schemes and supervised by subject experts to ensure fairness. WAEC reiterated its commitment to the integrity of its assessment processes and safeguarding candidates' interests.

WAEC released the 2026 WASSCE results on August 5, announcing that 1,200,514 candidates, or 61.54% of the 1,950,726 who sat the exam, achieved credits in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics. A total of 1,687,378 candidates, or 86.50%, obtained credits in various subjects.
