Warning as course is scrapped: Driver's licenses could become more expensive

Sweden is set to eliminate the mandatory introductory course for supervised driving, a requirement for obtaining a B driver's license, effective August 1. The government's decision aims to lower the barrier to entry for new drivers, citing the course's added cost.

However, driving instructors are sounding the alarm, warning that the removal of this requirement could paradoxically lead to higher costs and increased risks for new drivers. Robert Mihajlovic, a driving instructor with 20 years of experience, believes many individuals will learn to drive incorrectly without proper guidance. He anticipates they will face a "cold shower" during their driving tests and may need more lessons, ultimately making the process more expensive.

Instructors like Mihajlovic emphasize that the introductory course teaches supervisors essential skills, such as structuring lessons and avoiding common pitfalls. They argue that correcting ingrained bad habits acquired from untrained supervisors is difficult and time-consuming. There is also concern that a lack of proper training for supervisors could lead to dangerous situations on the road, as unprepared individuals may not handle critical moments effectively.

Jonas Nilsson, another driving instructor, echoed these concerns, stating that politicians are not listening to industry professionals. While acknowledging that the quality of the introductory courses had been inconsistent, he believes scrapping the requirement altogether is not the solution. Instead, he suggests improving and standardizing the course content nationwide.
