Washington wildfires burn 250,000 acres, triggering evacuations and power outages

Wildfires have consumed more than 250,000 acres across Washington state, forcing extensive evacuations and widespread power outages, particularly in the Spokane area. Officials reported Saturday evening that approximately 4,000 individuals were engaged in combating over a dozen active fires throughout the state.

Governor Bob Ferguson declared a statewide emergency and implemented a burn ban on Saturday. While no injuries or fatalities have been confirmed at this time, the scale of the fires is immense. Spokane, a city of roughly 230,000 residents, is contending with the Old Trails Fire, which has burned 3,000 acres and threatens an estimated 4,000 structures.

Several key facilities in Spokane, including water reclamation plants, a waste-energy plant, and the Department of Veterans Affairs hospital, have been evacuated. Mayor Lisa Brown noted that approximately 200 homes had been evacuated by Saturday afternoon, with expectations of this number increasing due to the large affected areas.

Utilities company Avista reported that 60,000 customers were without power. Governor Ferguson described the situation as "very serious," highlighting that high winds and temperatures forecast for the weekend would significantly complicate firefighting efforts. This summer, Washington has already seen about 450,000 acres burn, a figure described as "not normal" by officials.
