Water Fireworks to Light Up Saigon River for Ho Chi Minh City's 50th Anniversary

Ho Chi Minh City is set to unveil a novel "water fireworks" display on the Saigon River as a highlight of its celebration for the 50th anniversary of being renamed after President Ho Chi Minh. This unique pyrotechnic effect aims to create a distinctive "curtain of light" on the water's surface, offering a new visual experience compared to conventional fireworks.

Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Van Dung, Head of the Ordnance Department of the Ho Chi Minh City Command, explained that the goal is to innovate the fireworks presentation. The water fireworks, a new feature at the An Khanh ward's firing point, are designed to produce effects from the water level. Unlike standard fireworks shot into the sky, these will be launched into the water, utilizing the Saigon River to create a spectacular display that extends across the river's surface.

This innovative effect, previously seen at the Da Nang International Fireworks Festival (DIFF 2026), is being tested in Ho Chi Minh City as a step towards developing new presentation methods for future major festivals and holidays. The An Khanh site, the largest of the 16 firework locations planned for the July 2 event, will feature 1,200 high-altitude fireworks, 60 low-altitude clusters, and 18 low-altitude explosive clusters.

In addition to the water fireworks, the An Khanh site will utilize a 100% automated firing system. This system minimizes reliance on manual operations, allowing the entire 15-minute show to be programmed for precise timing and effects, ensuring a seamless performance. The overall celebration includes five high-altitude and eleven low-altitude firing points across the city.
