“We Can Rest Easy”: Timișoara Mayor Fritz Mocks Constitutional Court Ruling

Timișoara Mayor Dominic Fritz has responded with irony to the Romanian Constitutional Court's published reasoning for its decision that upholds a law potentially stripping him of his mayoral post. The court's ruling concerns a provision in the Law on the National Integrity Agency (ANI) regarding the termination of mandates in cases of incompatibility or conflict of interest.

Fritz, who is currently facing scrutiny under this law, expressed his reaction on Facebook. "We can rest easy, the CCR-PSD justified that the sanction does not apply to me, but to my mandate," he wrote, sarcastically referencing the court and the Social Democratic Party (PSD).

The Constitutional Court of Romania published its reasoning on Friday, August 21, detailing its decision from August 17. The court found the provision constitutional, stating it does not constitute retroactive punishment for past actions. Instead, it aims to "conclude a mandate whose integrity has been affected."

This provision, colloquially known as the "Fritz amendment," mandates the termination of mandates within 30 days for elected officials found in situations of incompatibility or conflict of interest. The law was introduced by the PSD and directly impacts Mayor Fritz.
