‘We stared into an abyss’: heroes battle France’s ‘megafire’

The air hangs thick with the smell of ash and burnt wood as exhausted firefighters, soldiers, and volunteers gather for a brief respite in Le Porge, France. The "megafire" that broke out nearby has scorched 42,000 hectares of forestland west of Bordeaux, pushing emergency services and hundreds of amateur helpers to their absolute limit.

Though the blaze is now contained, daily outbreaks continue, fueled by underground fires described by local media as "zombie fires." A senior firefighter at Le Porge, downing water, stated, "We’ve turned a corner but we are very, very tired. We have gone beyond what we thought possible. We stared into an abyss."

Around the village, charred trees stand as stark reminders of the fire's destructive path. While some areas remain intact, others are reduced to ash. Remy Bossion, 46, whose home was damaged, is now helping to create firebreaks. He noted, "Now we are all running on adrenaline, but the crisis is going to pass and that’s when it will be really hard. That’s when we will weep."

This wildfire is part of a broader pattern of devastation across Europe. In the Var region, George and Amal Clooney were forced to evacuate their home. Fires also threaten famous forests like Fontainebleau and Corsica. The EU is experiencing record-breaking fire weather, with the UK, Spain, and Greece also battling significant blazes, resulting in fatalities and mass evacuations.
