Weather for holidaymakers: Beaches suitable for swimming this weekend

Tunisia is bracing for a significant warming trend as the weekend approaches, with temperatures expected to climb as high as 41°C in some inland regions. This heatwave, while intense, is not deterring beachgoers, as sea conditions are predicted to be generally favorable for swimming across most of the country's coasts.

The latest bulletin from the National Institute of Meteorology indicates contrasting temperature ranges. Coastal areas and western highlands will experience milder conditions, with maximum temperatures hovering between 30°C and 35°C. However, the interior plains and central and southern regions will be much hotter, with thermometers potentially reaching 36°C to 41°C. This intense heat may be locally exacerbated by sirocco winds, known locally as Chehili.

Despite the heat, the day is forecast to be largely sunny with some light cloud cover developing throughout the day, becoming denser in the late afternoon over the western hills. More significantly, the southern regions should be vigilant for sand whirlwinds, particularly towards the end of the day. Easterly winds are expected to strengthen in the southern governorates before sunset, potentially causing dust storms and localized sand devils that could reduce visibility on desert roads.

Maritime conditions are expected to remain excellent for most of the weekend, offering great opportunities for swimming and navigation. The sea will be slightly agitated along all Tunisian coasts, with weak to moderate easterly winds. This situation is predicted to continue into Saturday, with calm waters particularly noted along the northern coasts, Cap Bon, and the Gulf of Hammamet. However, a gradual increase in vigilance is advised starting Sunday afternoon.
