Weather Worsens Across Croatia, Yellow Alerts Issued Nationwide

Croatia is bracing for a significant deterioration in weather conditions, with yellow alerts issued for nearly the entire country. The forecast predicts changeable weather, particularly from Wednesday onwards, bringing rain, thunderstorms, and the potential for heavy downpours.

While Tuesday offered predominantly sunny skies with moderate cloud cover and dry conditions, the latter part of the day saw cloudiness increasing from the west. Rain, showers, and thunderstorms are expected overnight, initially affecting the northern Adriatic and Gorski Kotar regions. Morning fog is also possible in inland areas. Winds will be light to moderate, shifting from southern and southwestern to northwestern in some areas, with the Adriatic coast experiencing southerly winds that will strengthen in the evening.

Wednesday is set to bring a more unstable weather pattern. The interior is expected to be variable to mostly cloudy with intermittent rain and thunderstorms. Locally heavy precipitation is possible, accompanied by significant lightning activity. Coastal areas will experience moderate to strong southerly and southwesterly winds, gradually shifting to northwesterly, with a bora possibly developing in the northern part.

The Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service (DHMZ) forecasts variable conditions on Wednesday and Friday, with the interior being mostly cloudy and unstable. Showers and thunderstorms are expected, with locally intense rainfall possible on Wednesday. Thursday is predicted to be partly sunny, though some showers might occur, especially in the south. The weather is expected to gradually stabilize by Thursday, but models suggest a potential return of showers by the weekend.

Recent weather events, including a supercell-like system over northern Istria that brought hail and heavy rain, serve as a prelude to the main weather disturbance arriving midweek. This system could lead to flash floods in some areas due to the intense downpours. While conditions are expected to improve on Thursday, the possibility of renewed showers by the week's end remains.
