Wednesday Evening Solar Eclipse Could Cause Severe Vision Damage Without Proper Equipment

Skywatchers in several parts of the world are set to witness a total solar eclipse on Wednesday evening, a celestial event that will render the Sun's faint outer atmosphere, the corona, visible. The path of totality will traverse Greenland, Iceland, and specific regions of Spain.

For those in Hungary, the eclipse will be partial as the country lies outside the central path of totality, within the Moon's penumbra. However, the Svábhegy Observatory is offering a solution for Hungarian enthusiasts. They will host a "Csillagkapu" (Star Gate) program on August 12, featuring a live broadcast of the total solar eclipse occurring in Spain, accompanied by expert commentary.

This night promises to be exceptionally eventful for astronomy lovers. In addition to the solar eclipse, the peak of the annual Perseid meteor shower is also expected. Furthermore, skygazers will have the opportunity to observe Venus during its dichotomy, a phase where it appears half-illuminated, similar to a quarter moon.

The conjunction of these events makes the night of August 12-13 a significant occasion. The last time Hungary experienced a similar sunrise with a partially eclipsed sun near the horizon was on May 31, 2003. A sunset featuring a crescent-shaped eclipsed sun, akin to what will be visible in Spain, will not occur again from Hungary until June 21, 2039.
