Weiwuying and Chun Mei Opera Stage 'Jiaoluo Fragrance,' Reimagining Western Legend with Eastern Flair

The National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) is joining forces with the Chun Mei Taiwanese Opera Company for a grand new production, 'Jiaoluo Fragrance.' This epic drama, set to premiere on September 12 and 13, offers a contemporary retelling of the legendary romance between Cleopatra and Mark Antony. The production ingeniously translates the Western classic into the vibrant tradition of Taiwanese opera (gezaixi), drawing parallels to modern geopolitical landscapes, propaganda, political theater, and intricate power struggles.

The title, 'Jiaoluo,' refers to a top-grade agarwood, symbolizing a precious resource caught in a destined struggle among various powers. The narrative unfolds following the sudden death of the Great Qin's former king. The new king, Dugu Haitang, initiates a power purge under the guise of restoring order, pushing the decorated General Antonning to the brink. Caught between a political marriage and national obligations, Antonning finds solace in a foreign land with the rumored formidable Eastern Queen Jiaoluo. Amidst propaganda warfare and calculated schemes, they develop a deep connection. Ultimately, Antonning severs ties with power and seeks a life with Jiaoluo, leading to an ultimate confrontation of ideals and freedom against Dugu Haitang.

A major highlight of the production is its innovative use of the opera house's rotating stage to recreate the climactic Battle of Actium. This dynamic staging allows for intense combat sequences, seamless scene transitions, and visually stunning fight choreography, amplifying the tension of the battle and the epic atmosphere. The production overcomes the challenges of depicting a naval battle within a theater, integrating unprecedented martial arts direction and acrobatic elements to deliver a fresh sensory experience for the audience.

The cast boasts a strong lineup, with Guo Chunmei, a Golden Melody Award winner for Best Actor, portraying the warrior Antonning, a role inspired by the Roman general Mark Antony. Sun Kailin, a recipient of the Golden Melody Award for Best New Artist, takes on the role of the introspective new king Dugu Haitang, previously known as Octavian. Notably, mother and daughter Guo Chunmei and Sun Kailin will share the stage, both performing as male roles (xiaosheng). Jian Jiayi, the company's lead dan (xiaodan) actress, embodies the Eastern Queen Jiaoluo, paralleling Cleopatra. Breaking the traditional stereotype of the demure xiaodan, Jian Jiayi portrays a queen with strategic prowess and commanding presence. This powerful trio uses their exceptional acting skills to convey the emotional complexities and power dynamics of their characters.
