Weiwuying presents Verdi's 'Il Trovatore' with 'Game of Thrones' inspired staging

The National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) is set to present a highly anticipated new production of Giuseppe Verdi's opera "Il Trovatore" from September 3 to 6. This staging is a significant milestone, marking Weiwuying's decade of opera production and its commitment to building a robust local opera scene.

Directed by Stefano Mazzonis di Pralormo and with stage design by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle, the production boasts a unique aesthetic inspired by the medieval fantasy world of "Game of Thrones." This contemporary reimagining aims to connect the 19th-century masterpiece with modern audiences. The performance will feature over 100 professionals, including conductor and artistic director Chien Wen-pin, alongside a cast of distinguished singers and the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra.

"Il Trovatore," set in early 15th-century Spain, delves into a complex narrative of familial strife and unrequited love. The story centers on Manrico, the Troubadour, and Count di Luna, who unknowingly compete for the affection of Leonora, unaware they are brothers. The opera is renowned for its powerful melodies and intense dramatic tension, exploring themes of revenge, passion, and sacrifice.

Artistic Director Chien Wen-pin stated that staging "Il Trovatore" signifies Weiwuying's transition into a more mature production phase after ten years of experience. He emphasized that this production is not merely a reinterpretation of a classic but also a rigorous self-assessment of the team's capabilities. Weiwuying's commitment to a fully self-produced approach, from conceptualization to execution, underscores its ambition to create internationally-minded local productions.
