West Bank on edge as IDF warns seam line gaps could enable Oct. 7 style terrorist raids

Senior Israeli military officials are warning of an imminent and significant threat in the West Bank, fearing that breaches in the seam zone could facilitate large-scale terrorist raids akin to the October 7 massacre. Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir expressed grave concern, stating, "I am not prepared to manage risks here," as the IDF escalates efforts to preempt future attacks.

The seam zone, the area between the Green Line and Israel's separation barrier, is characterized by vulnerable sections of torn fences and open terrain. IDF officials consider this arena more sensitive than Gaza or Lebanon, especially as the nation marks 1,000 days since the October 7 attacks. The military is implementing special troop reinforcements along the seam zone and on main routes, with commanders training for scenarios involving terrorist raids and Palestinian mob assaults on Israeli communities.

Adding to the security challenges, a recent government decision to establish 103 new settlements, along with numerous individual farms and illegal outposts, has significantly expanded the area of responsibility for IDF forces. This expansion increases the potential for infiltration and attacks. The IDF is conducting intensive, round-the-clock operations in the West Bank, including covert actions and aggressive maneuvers, to counter the threat. Since the beginning of 2026, over 12,000 offensive raids have been carried out, resulting in the transfer of 1,950 wanted suspects to interrogation.
