West Nile virus alert in Italy: 432 cases, 17 deaths reported

Italy is on alert as the West Nile virus has infected 432 people and caused 17 deaths since the start of the year, according to the Italian National Institute of Health (ISS).

The virus has spread to 66 cities across the country. This figure is slightly higher than the 430 cases and 27 deaths recorded during the same period last year, indicating its continued presence and spread.

West Nile virus is typically transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes, primarily of the 'Culex' species. Health authorities recommend protective measures against mosquito bites, as there is no vaccine available to prevent infection.

The incubation period after a mosquito bite ranges from 2 to 14 days, potentially extending to 21 days for individuals with weakened immune systems. Approximately 80% of infected individuals show no symptoms, while about 20% develop symptoms such as fever, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, headache, and muscle aches.
