West Nile virus spreads across Europe, with over 240 cases reported

West Nile virus has been confirmed in over 240 individuals across Europe this year, according to a weekly report from the European Centre for Prevention and Control of Diseases (ECDC). Italy leads with 139 cases, followed by Greece with 61. Other European countries reporting infections include Spain (17), North Macedonia (13), Romania (6), France (4), and Germany (1).

The World Health Organization (WHO) recently urged increased vigilance after several cases of West Nile fever were detected in southern Europe. The virus typically cycles between mosquitoes and birds, but infected mosquitoes can transmit it to humans. The peak transmission period is usually between July and September.

Most people infected with West Nile virus show no symptoms, leading researchers to believe that the number of unreported cases is significant. However, in severe instances, the virus can affect the nervous system, potentially causing encephalitis and meningitis. Currently, there is neither a vaccine nor a specific medication to treat the virus; medical care is limited to alleviating symptoms.

To minimize the risk of infection, the WHO advises travelers to wear appropriate clothing and use mosquito repellent. The ECDC's report highlights the ongoing presence of the virus in Europe and the importance of public health awareness and preventative measures.
