Western Canada province declares state of emergency amid wildfire

Authorities in western Canada's British Columbia province declared a state of emergency on Saturday, August 8, issuing evacuation orders for thousands of residents in areas known for vineyards and orchards. This action was prompted by a fast-moving wildfire that dramatically expanded overnight.

The 'Bald Range' fire, which is currently out of control, has grown to approximately 9,500 hectares (about 23,500 acres), nearly doubling in size within hours. The rapid escalation forced officials to order evacuations for communities including Summerland, Peachland, and other areas west of Okanagan Lake.

British Columbia Premier David Eby stated during a press conference that the fires have caused the loss of homes and destruction of property. He noted that some residents found themselves trapped as conditions changed rapidly, necessitating rescue operations. Eby described the situation as "extremely volatile and threatening" due to the ongoing spread and difficulty in controlling the flames.

Summerland Mayor Doug Holmes reported that a significant number of farms have been damaged. He added that authorities have not yet determined the exact number of buildings destroyed by the fire, as emergency teams are focused on combating the blaze and containing its spread. Holmes emphasized the need to prepare for the worst-case scenario amid shifting conditions and simultaneous evacuation and firefighting efforts.
