Western Sydney Opens Historic Buildings to Public for One Day Event

For one day only, Western Sydney is unlocking the doors to some of its most significant and historic sites, offering the public a rare glimpse into the region's past. The inaugural Parramatta Open event provides access to 16 buildings and spaces that are typically off-limits, including Australia's oldest surviving public building.

This event is an extension of the well-established Sydney Open, with organizers aiming to showcase the rich heritage of Parramatta, a rapidly developing area of Sydney. Tania Quax, the event manager, noted that Parramatta was a natural choice for expansion due to its deep historical roots and ongoing evolution.

A major drawcard is the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old Government House. Constructed between 1799 and 1818 by convict labor, this former residence of 10 early New South Wales governors stands as a unique time capsule of Australia's convict era. Volunteer guides like Mark Ransom are eager to share the stories held within its walls.

It's not just about the history of these built environments, it's also about the lives that were affected within these buildings.

Another significant site is the Parramatta Female Factory, the sole surviving purpose-built facility for female convicts in Australia. Khadija Ibtisam, a volunteer guide with an architecture background, highlighted the emotional connection to the space, imagining the lives of the thousands of women and children who passed through it centuries ago.

The event also features Elizabeth Farm, the nation's oldest colonial homestead, alongside modern structures like the PHIVE building and the 55-story 6-8 Parramatta Square tower. The overwhelming public response has led to tickets selling out in advance, demonstrating a strong desire to connect with and explore Western Sydney's historical and architectural landscape.
