What Agreements Did Delcy Rodríguez Sign to Restore Venezuela’s Electricity System?

Venezuela has signed agreements with GE Vernova aimed at restoring its electricity infrastructure and building energy capacity for the oil industry. Acting President Delcy Rodríguez said the plan would allow petroleum operations to rely on complementary energy sources rather than adding to the strain on the national grid.

One agreement covers the recovery of electrical infrastructure serving the oil industry. Rodríguez said the goal was to give the sector its own capabilities and prevent oil production from becoming an additional burden on the national system. The arrangement was signed by Carlos Mousadi, president of GE Vernova Venezuela, and Jovanny Martínez, Pdvsa’s executive vice president.

A separate agreement with Corpoelec will address several parts of the electricity network, including hydroelectric and thermoelectric generation systems, as well as transmission and distribution lines. The authorities did not disclose details or the value of that agreement.

It is a very important agreement.

“Without electricity there is no life,” Rodríguez said during the signing ceremony, describing the agreements as an effort undertaken for Venezuelans. The country has faced electricity supply problems for years, particularly in states far from Caracas.

The government attributes the failures mainly to foreign sanctions. The opposition and experts point to factors including corruption and insufficient maintenance. The agreements formed part of eight strategic energy cooperation deals signed at the Miraflores Palace with U.S. and Italian companies, as well as Venezuelan firms. Chris Wright attended the ceremony during his visit to Caracas, where agreements with Chevron, ENI and GE Vernova were also signed.
