Ecuador faces constant seismic risk due to its location within the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region where the interaction of tectonic plates generates 90% of the world's earthquakes. The recent magnitude 7.4 earthquake in western Colombia has intensified public interest in these geological phenomena.

Tectonic plates are large fragments of the Earth's crust that continuously move and collide on the planet's mantle. When these plates converge, intense friction builds up at their edges, which is eventually released as seismic waves, causing earthquakes. This process, known as plate tectonics, can also lead to crustal fractures and volcanic activity in affected areas.

The Pacific Ring of Fire is a vast, horseshoe-shaped zone stretching 40,000 kilometers, concentrating the planet's most significant seismic and volcanic activity. It is here that major tectonic plates, including the Nazca, South American, Cocos, Pacific, and Philippine plates, converge. According to reports, 90% of global earthquakes occur along this extensive Pacific belt, which also hosts over 450 volcanic structures, representing about 75% of the world's potentially active volcanoes.

Ecuador's geographical position places it directly on the subduction zone where the Nazca plate actively sinks beneath the South American plate in the Pacific Ocean. This direct alignment within the Ring of Fire makes the country highly and permanently vulnerable to seismic events. Geological authorities and geophysical organizations continuously monitor the accumulation of tension along the South American coast and observe the behavior of local fault lines, urging nations like Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, and Chile to remain vigilant.
