What raising the Livret A savings ceiling to €30,000 would change for France and savers

Raising the ceiling on France’s Livret A savings account to €30,000 could direct nearly €10 billion in new resources each year toward climate adaptation, according to Ecology Minister Monique Barbut.

Barbut wants to increase the current ceiling from €22,950. She told Les Échos that the measure would encourage millions of French people to place more money in the account, creating additional funds in the form of long-term loans.

The proposal has not yet received government approval. Its stated aim is to help finance efforts to address climate change, including the insulation of public buildings and cooling measures.

The debate comes after what the article describes as France’s hottest summer on record. The economic loss linked to the heatwave is estimated at 0.1 percent of gross domestic product, or nearly €3 billion. Barbut is also responsible for a plan to adapt France to temperatures 4 degrees Celsius higher by the end of the century.
