White House avoids confirming talks on Infantino for UN chief

The White House has sidestepped questions about whether President Donald Trump has spoken with FIFA President Gianni Infantino about a potential bid for the UN Secretary-General position. White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt stated she was unaware of any such conversations but acknowledged Trump's frequent communication with Infantino and his high regard for the FIFA president.

This comes after the New York Post reported that Trump was actively promoting Infantino for the role. The report cited Infantino's international standing and perceived ability to foster unity as reasons for Trump's alleged support. The relationship between Trump and Infantino has previously drawn scrutiny, particularly after Trump admitted to contacting Infantino regarding a suspension for a US soccer player during the World Cup.

I don’t know if he and the president have spoken about that. I haven’t been present for all of their conversations. I know they speak frequently and that the president has a great deal of respect for Gianni and what he has done with FIFA.

Leavitt, however, focused on the success of the World Cup hosted in the US, calling it a "resounding success" that benefited local economies and showcased the country. She expressed gratitude to Infantino for his efforts in making the event a reality in the United States.

The next UN Secretary-General will be chosen this year to succeed António Guterres. The selection process requires a recommendation from the Security Council, where the US holds veto power, before final confirmation by the General Assembly. Trump's previous tenure in the White House was marked by a strained relationship with the UN, including withdrawing the US from the Paris Agreement and the World Health Organization.
