White House shooter identified by media as 21-year-old Nasire Best

A 21-year-old man, identified by multiple U.S. media outlets as Nasire Best, died after firing shots at White House security personnel on Saturday evening. The incident occurred near a checkpoint at the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue.

According to the Secret Service, the assailant approached a checkpoint, produced a weapon from his bag, and began shooting at agents. The agents returned fire, and the suspect was wounded. He was transported to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. A bystander was also struck by a bullet, but no Secret Service agents were harmed. Former President Donald Trump was at the White House during the incident but was not affected.

While authorities have not officially confirmed his name, reports citing sources close to the investigation identify the shooter as Nasire Best, a Maryland native who had been living in Washington for about 18 months. This profile is marked by previous encounters with security forces at the very same location.

Court documents from the District of Columbia indicate that Best was arrested in July 2025 for attempting to enter a restricted area of the presidential complex without authorization. At the time, he reportedly ignored agents' commands, crossed a restricted exit lane, and declared himself "Jesus Christ," stating he wished to be arrested. A court order prohibiting him from approaching the White House was subsequently issued. A warrant for his arrest was later issued for violating this order before he eventually appeared for a later hearing.

This incident was reportedly not his first. CNN, citing a court document and police sources, reported that Best had been taken into custody on June 26, 2025, after blocking an access road to the presidential complex. He had allegedly claimed to be "God" and was taken to the Washington psychiatric institute for evaluation. Social media posts attributed to Best reportedly include further disturbing statements, such as claiming to be "the son of God" or "the real" Osama bin Laden.
