White Supremacist Group Patriot Front Marches in Washington D.C.

Washington D.C. witnessed a demonstration by the white supremacist group Patriot Front, as hundreds of masked members marched through the city. Carrying Confederate flags and variations of the U.S. flag, the group's presence has intensified debates surrounding the visibility of white supremacist movements in the U.S.

Patriot Front announced on social media that approximately 400 members participated in the march. Reuters photojournalists observed group members moving through the Washington Metro and gathering at various points in the city. Videos shared on social media and the group's Telegram channel depicted members marching to the sound of drums, clad in khaki pants, blue shirts, white face masks, hats, and sunglasses. Some carried Patriot Front flags alongside Confederate flags and altered U.S. flags.

The Washington Metropolitan Police stated they were monitoring the Patriot Front's activities under the First Amendment. A police spokesperson confirmed no arrests, complaints, or calls for assistance were reported in connection with the march. The police emphasized their commitment to ensuring the safety of Washington residents and visitors while respecting individuals' rights to peaceful expression.

Patriot Front was formed in 2017 after splitting from the white supremacist group Vanguard America, following the deadly "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. The Southern Poverty Law Center identifies Patriot Front as a "white nationalist hate group," while the George Washington University Program on Extremism characterizes it as a white nationalist and fascist organization advocating for a homogenous "white ethno-state" in the U.S.
