Who is Mohand Bourai, the new governor of the Bank of Algeria appointed by Tebboune?

Mohand Bourai has taken charge of the Bank of Algeria after building his career inside the country’s banking sector.

Bourai officially assumed the central bank governorship in Algiers on Thursday, September 3, during a handover ceremony with Mohamed Lamine Lebbou. Lebbou, who had held the governor’s post, became finance minister after a cabinet reshuffle ordered by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune two days earlier.

Before his appointment, Bourai headed the Banque de l’Agriculture et du Développement rural, known as BADR, a public bank involved in financing agricultural activity and rural development. He also chaired the Association professionnelle des banques et des établissements financiers, or ABEF, which represents Algeria’s banking and financial institutions.

That role placed him in direct contact with banks and financial establishments across the sector. His previous experience also includes serving as deputy general manager for finance and accounting at CNEP-Banque.

At the handover ceremony, Lebbou said Tebboune had instructed him to transfer the responsibilities to Bourai as the new governor. Bourai thanked the president for his confidence and said he intended to work with the sector’s various stakeholders to support the country’s economic momentum.
