Who is registered for Quito's mayoralty as deadline nears?

The race for Quito's mayor is entering its final stretch, with the deadline for candidate registration set for August 17, 2026. While many political parties and movements have publicly presented their hopefuls, the official electoral system has yet to confirm all candidacies.

As of Thursday morning, August 13, Pabel Muñoz was the sole candidate officially inscribed for the mayoral position, according to the Provincial Electoral Delegation of Pichincha. Muñoz, the current mayor, is seeking re-election with the support of the Citizen Alliance, a coalition including Unidad Popular, the Ecuadorian Socialist Party, and the provincial movement Todos. His organization submitted its candidacy on August 6.

Several other aspirants have been announced by their respective parties. Acción Democrática Nacional (ADN) presented Harold Burbano on August 2, and the Imparables movement confirmed Wilson Merino, whose registration was scheduled for August 14. Former mayor Jorge Yunda accepted his candidacy for Avanza on July 4, with his party planning to register between August 12 and 13.

Other announced candidates include Carla Larrea for CREO, Alejandro Guevara for Pachakutik, Galo Almeida for Centro Democrático, César Díaz for Pueblo Igualdad y Democracia, Linda Romero for the Social Christian Party, and Paul Desamblanc for Futuro 20. Sociedad Patriótica announced Bernardo Jijón, and Izquierda Democrática selected Juan Esteban Guarderas. However, none of these appeared in the official registration report as of Thursday morning.

In related news, the Provincial Electoral Delegation also reported two slates registered for the Pichincha Prefecture. The Social Christian Party has nominated Gema Ormaza for prefect, with Marcelo as her running mate.
