“Whoever Wins Yuanlin Wins Changhua”? City Race Pits DPP’s “Big Hen Leads the Chicks” Against KMT’s “Chick Leads the Hen”

Yuanlin, Changhua County’s second-largest electoral base, is setting up a mayoral contest framed as a battle between two political pairings. The Democratic Progressive Party’s Chang Cheng-yueh has the backing of county candidate Chen Su-yueh, while the Kuomintang’s Tu Chun-jen is seeking to use his own local network to shape the race.

Chang, a neighborhood chief from Daming Borough, registered with Chen and several DPP officials surrounding him. He said that during eight years as a neighborhood chief, he had followed the service approach of Chen’s legislative team, which he described as serving residents without regard to their area.

Accelerating Changhua, advancing Yuanlin

After handling more than 1,000 grassroots complaints, Chang said he had seen many residents who were not adequately cared for by the city office. Their dissatisfaction and regret, he said, led him to run for mayor. His campaign goal is “Accelerating Changhua, advancing Yuanlin,” with plans to work with the county government on the city’s next stage of development.

Chen said Chang’s grassroots background gave him a strong understanding of residents’ needs. The two had worked together before, she said, and she hoped they could win together this time.

Healthy metropolis, livable city, leading flagship

Tu, a county councilor who is moving into the mayoral race, registered on Sept. 3 with Changhua KMT chairman Hsiao Ching-tien, county councilors and local neighborhood chiefs. Coming from a political and medical family, Tu has been preparing for the race for some time. He said registration was more than a formal procedure, calling it a commitment to his hometown and a pledge to the city’s residents. His campaign theme is “Healthy metropolis, livable city, leading flagship.”

The rivalry has produced a local political slogan: “Whoever wins Yuanlin wins Changhua.” Chen is considered a strong ally for Chang because Yuanlin is her political base. On the KMT side, the county-level candidate Wei Ping-cheng has struggled to build name recognition in Yuanlin, prompting observers to describe Tu as the “chick” who could lead the “hen.”
