Why I divorced my first wife - Bashir El-Rufai

Bashir El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, has publicly shared the reasons behind the dissolution of his marriage to Halima Kazaure. The couple, who married in October 2020, saw their union announced in November of the same year, with prominent figures like former Senate President Ahmad Lawan and former Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II in attendance.

El-Rufai announced their separation on his X account following a Q&A session, after he had publicly expressed admiration for another woman during the recent Eid al-Kabir celebrations. He had reposted a picture of the woman with a caption about wanting a baby girl, which led to user comments reminding him he was still married. He clarified that he had already divorced his first wife and that the woman in the reposted picture was now his fiancée.

He further elaborated that he has never actively pursued women for marriage, stating that women have always made the first move. He specifically mentioned that Halima proposed to him. "I don’t toast, babes. Never have... Sometimes it’s even years later that I discover one babe or another likes me. I can’t tell. They make the first move. I also never asked a girl to marry me. Even in my 1st, she was the one who proposed," he noted. As of press time, Halima had not publicly responded to Bashir's claims regarding their divorce.
