Why Is a Film Called Hope Filled With Pursuit and Terror? Director Na Hong-jin Explains

Na Hong-jin’s new film is called Hope, but fear, attacks and collapse dominate its story. The director’s latest work, Hope: The Blood of the Apocalypse, brings aliens into a small rural village and quickly forces its people into a fight for survival.

Hwang Jung-min plays a local chief who senses that something is wrong. Before he can understand what is happening, he becomes trapped in the deadly conflict. Zo In-sung and Jung Ho-yeon also join the battle. Whether the three can protect the village becomes the film’s central source of tension.

The title creates a sharp contrast with Na’s earlier films, including The Chaser, The Yellow Sea and The Wailing. Those titles are short and carry an immediate sense of fate. Hope appears gentler, yet the film surrounds the idea with terror and destruction.

Na explains that hope ceases to be hope at the moment it is fulfilled. Conflicts between different hopes, he says, can instead suggest something impossible. He wanted to avoid a straightforward clash between good and evil, showing characters who each have reasons to be understood from their own positions.

The film also hides a Hollywood surprise. Married actors Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander appear together, but not as visiting international stars making a grand entrance. Viewers have to look carefully to spot them. Na says the story ends when the next night has passed and the sun rises, leaving out developments audiences might easily predict. If a sequel is made, Hwang Jung-min and Vikander could become central figures, and the actors are reportedly interested in seeing where the story goes.
