Why the risk of head trauma is higher for electric scooter riders than motorcyclists

Electric scooter riders are more vulnerable to head injuries than motorcyclists, according to a comprehensive new study. This research marks the first large-scale, country-wide analysis of the dangers associated with these increasingly popular urban transport devices.

The study, which examined more than 15,000 road accidents involving scooters between 2020 and 2022, found a significant rise in head trauma among riders. Beyond head injuries, the data also points to an increase in internal injuries and hemorrhages, underscoring the severity of accidents involving electric scooters.

While electric scooters have become a common sight in cities worldwide over the past decade, their safety has been a subject of intense debate. Previous studies were often localized, relying on data from single hospitals. This new British study offers a broader perspective, confirming fears about the inherent risks of riding these vehicles in mixed traffic environments.

The findings challenge the notion that the surge in scooter-related accidents is merely a consequence of their growing popularity.
