Wildfire near Logan Lake prompts evacuation alerts, partial highway closure

A new wildfire is actively burning out of control near Logan Lake, British Columbia, prompting evacuation alerts and a partial closure of Highway 97C. The blaze, located in the Guichon Creek area south of the highway, has consumed an estimated 88 hectares.

BC Wildfire Service crews are working to contain the fire, which is showing Rank 2 and 3 fire behavior, indicating a surface fire with some open flames and a moderate rate of spread. The closure affects Highway 97C between Logan Lake and the Highland Valley Copper Mine, impacting transportation in the region.

Evacuation alerts have been issued by the Thompson Nicola Regional District and the District of Logan Lake, affecting close to 60 properties in the vicinity. Residents are advised to be prepared to leave if the situation escalates.

The cause of the wildfire is currently under investigation, but the BC Wildfire Service suspects it may be human-caused. This incident adds to the ongoing challenges faced by the province in managing wildfires, particularly during dry conditions.
