Wildfire spotted from space as helicopter brought in to tackle blaze

Wildfires have scorched an estimated 951 hectares (2,350 acres) of the Rhinogydd mountains in north Wales, with the damage now visible from space. Satellite imagery captured plumes of smoke and the extent of the blaze, which broke out earlier this month. NASA's satellite-based FIRMS monitoring system has also detected heat signatures from four separate wildfire incidents across Wales, including locations in Torfaen, Powys, and Flintshire.

While the helicopter is being deployed to support the response in the Rhinogydd, its availability will continue to be assessed in line with operational needs across Wales and the wider UK.

In response to the escalating situation, Natural Resources Wales announced the deployment of a specialist firefighting helicopter to Rhinogydd on Friday morning, providing crucial aerial support. The Welsh government has activated crisis management arrangements to coordinate efforts against the multiple wildfires. Officials emphasized that the helicopter's deployment would be continuously assessed based on operational needs across Wales and the wider UK.

Authorities are urging the public to stay away from the affected areas, citing safety concerns and the potential for emergency rescue assistance to be required for those who ignore road closures and police cordons. North Wales Police warned that entering restricted zones or disobeying directions could lead to enforcement action. The fires in Rhinogydd and Blaenavon are considered the most significant wildfire incidents in Wales, though other blazes have been successfully controlled and are being monitored.
