Wildfires Force Thousands to Evacuate B.C. Wine Region

Wildfires are engulfing British Columbia's wine and orchard region, forcing thousands of residents to flee their homes. The "Bald Range fire" has doubled in size overnight and is now burning out of control across 9,500 hectares. Authorities have issued urgent evacuation orders for Summerland, Peachland, and other communities west of Okanagan Lake.

This area is a vital part of British Columbia's wine industry, Canada's second-largest. Summerland Mayor Doug Holmes expressed concern over potential damage to farms and buildings, stating that efforts are underway to combat the blaze and that "we have to prepare for the worst."

Many farms are affected, and we don't know how many buildings have been lost yet. Personnel are still working hard to extinguish the fire, and we have to prepare for the worst.

Residents like Terry Fries described seeing the glow of the fire in the distance the night before, only to be woken by evacuation orders around midnight. He and his family fled north to Kelowna. Summerland is also facing power outages and a boil water advisory due to the fires affecting the water treatment system.

Across Canada, multiple provinces, including Ontario and Quebec, are battling wildfires fueled by hot, dry weather. International firefighters from Mexico, Australia, France, and New Zealand are assisting in the efforts. In British Columbia alone, about 1,500 firefighters are engaged in disaster response, with 38 evacuation orders and 49 alerts in place for over 100 fires.
