Wildfires in US state of Nevada: Tens of thousands forced to flee

Severe wildfires raging in the U.S. state of Nevada have forced authorities to issue evacuation orders for 42,000 residents, with an additional 45,000 people advised to prepare for immediate evacuation or leave their homes. The fires, located in a hilly area on the outskirts of Reno, spread rapidly throughout Sunday, consuming over 6,000 hectares.

Six individuals, including three emergency responders, have sustained injuries, according to officials. Approximately 800 firefighters are actively battling the blazes. Emergency services stated that the fires were caused by human activity, though further details were not immediately provided as investigations continue.

The school district has announced that classes will be canceled on Monday in the affected region's schools. Governor Joe Lombardo has declared a state of emergency for Washoe County.

The fires are burning in the far west of the desert state, close to the California border and the renowned casino city of Reno. Firefighters were first alerted to the blaze on Saturday morning and have since been engaged in a struggle against flames that primarily consume grass and brush.

"Our weather conditions continue to be difficult," said Pete Bryant of the Reno Fire Department. "Hot, dry, windy – and no end is in sight for now."
