Willson Contreras Replaces Injured Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in MLB All-Star Game

Venezuelan catcher Willson Contreras of the Boston Red Sox has been named to the American League's All-Star roster, stepping in for Vladimir Guerrero Jr. of the Toronto Blue Jays. Guerrero is withdrawing from the event due to a nagging back injury.

MLB's official portal highlighted Contreras's exceptional performance this season, suggesting it might be the best of his career. As of the latest reports, Contreras has hit 20 home runs, putting him on track to surpass his previous personal best of 24. This marks his first season with the Red Sox, where he has become a key offensive player.

Contreras's .920 OPS (on-base plus slugging) is also on pace to be a career high. He ranks third among all first basemen in the American League for this statistic. His batting average of .284 entering Tuesday's games was the highest among first basemen in the league.

Guerrero, who led fan voting for first basemen and was set for his sixth All-Star selection, decided to decline his spot to rest his lower back. Despite Contreras taking Guerrero's place, Nick Kurtz of the Athletics will be the starting first baseman for the American League. The All-Star Game is scheduled for July 14 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. Contreras will be joined by fellow Latin American players, including his brother William, Luis Arráez, Ranger Suárez, and Eduardo Rodríguez.
