Wilyer Abreu named AL Player of the Week

Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu has been named the American League Player of the Week, marking a significant career milestone. The Venezuelan player delivered a stellar performance in the week following the All-Star break, capitalizing on his opportunities at the plate.

Abreu went 5-for-14, launching four home runs and driving in six runs. His powerful offensive display was instrumental in the Red Sox sweeping the Tampa Bay Rays at home, extending Boston's winning streak to an impressive 13 games. This streak is the longest for the franchise in nearly 80 years and brings the team closer to postseason contention.

The outfielder's four home runs came in just two games, including a crucial two-homer performance on Saturday that fueled Boston's comeback victory. Abreu, a two-time Gold Glove winner, is enjoying his best offensive season to date, boasting a .264 batting average with a .337 on-base percentage and a .458 slugging percentage, along with 15 home runs and 49 RBIs.

In the National League, Atlanta Braves catcher Drake Baldwin also earned Player of the Week recognition. Baldwin batted .714 with five runs scored, eight RBIs, and three home runs, including two on Sunday. His performance helped the Braves win two out of three games against the Texas Rangers. This award is the first weekly honor of Baldwin's career.
