Woman held in murder case gives birth inside jail ambulance in Jashore

A 19-year-old woman arrested on a murder charge gave birth to a baby boy inside a Jashore Central Jail ambulance while she was being taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital in labour.

Prison authorities said Bristy Khatun was travelling from Jashore to the hospital when she delivered at about 8:40 p.m. in the Churamonkathi area of Jashore Sadar. Police arrested her in connection with the killing of van driver Jasim Uddin in Daulatpur village of Jhenaidah’s Harinakundu upazila. The victim’s father, Moktar Hossain, filed the case.

Jashore Central Jail officials said they immediately arranged medical care for the mother and newborn. Both were in good health, according to jailer Abid Ahmed.

The jail provided baby clothes, a mosquito net, bedding, a towel, napkins, diapers and olive oil. Officials also presented flowers to the mother and child and distributed sweets. Abid said the arrangements followed instructions from the inspector general of prisons.
