Woman in Her 20s Dies After Being Forced to Fight Two Teenagers Under ‘Yacha Rules’; Two Arrested

A woman in her 20s died after fighting two teenage girls under what police described as the so-called “Yacha rules,” a form of unprotected, indiscriminate fighting. Two people in their 20s who allegedly forced the fight have been arrested.

Cheongju Sangdang Police said on September 8 that they arrested a man and a woman in their 20s on suspicion of jointly coercing the woman and the two minors to fight. The incident took place at about 12:20 a.m. on May 29 in a park in Sangdang-gu, Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province.

The Yacha rules are a form of indiscriminate fighting without protective equipment, regardless of the location.

Police said the arrested pair were a couple and had forced the fight because of existing bad feelings toward the deceased woman and the two teenagers. The woman fought the two girls one at a time while the pair watched. She collapsed during the fight and was taken to hospital in cardiac arrest, but died. An autopsy reportedly found injuries, including damage to her cervical vertebrae, as the cause of death.

The two teenagers were booked without detention on suspicion of causing death by assault. Police said the participants initially denied wrongdoing, claiming they had been playing tag in a rainy park when the woman fell and lost consciousness after someone behind her stepped on her head. Investigators said an autopsy and digital forensics from mobile phones later revealed signs that the accounts had been coordinated.
