Woman Survives Earthquake Surgery Amidst Rubble in Cali, Colombia

In the aftermath of the devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck Cali, Colombia, on August 10, 2026, a remarkable medical intervention took place amidst the ruins. Just 15 minutes after the tremor, a health team ventured into the debris of a collapsed four-story building.

Paula Andrea Lasprilla was among those trapped in the El Lido neighborhood's Vanessa building, which crumbled under the earthquake's force. While her son, Omar Martínez Lasprilla, was rescued, Paula remained pinned by heavy debris, her lower limb severely compressed. This compression threatened her life by cutting off blood flow and inducing crush syndrome.

Recognizing the imminent danger, traumatologist Laureano Quintero and his specialized surgical team arrived at the scene. They determined that moving Paula without immediate surgical intervention carried a high risk of death or hemorrhage. "The most critical conditions stemmed from the significant crushing by the structures, which presented much more significant clinical risks," Quintero explained.

The medical team performed a high-risk surgery directly within the hazardous environment of the rubble. This on-site procedure provided a temporary life support measure, stabilizing Paula's condition and preventing the catastrophic consequences of crush syndrome.
