Women and children with IS ties fly home to Australia

Seven women and 12 children with alleged ties to Islamic State militants have returned to Australia after years in a Syrian camp. The group, described as "IS brides," are Australian citizens who departed the al-Roj camp in northeastern Syria, which is under the control of Syrian-Kurdish forces.

Australian Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke stated that the returnees will not receive any government assistance. "Anyone from this group who has committed crimes can expect to be met with the full force of the law," Burke said. He added, "These are people who have made the terrible choice to join a dangerous terrorist organization and to place their children in an indescribable situation."

Some of the women and children will arrive in Melbourne, while others will land in Sydney, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. This follows the recent arrival of 13 other Australian citizens, four women and their nine children, from Syria earlier this month, who also have connections to IS fighters. Upon arrival in Melbourne, two women, a mother and daughter, were arrested and accused of holding a woman as a slave after traveling to Syria in 2014 to support IS. A third woman was also arrested upon landing in Sydney, facing charges including joining what is considered a terrorist organization.
