Wonju's 'Grateful Pheasant' Bell Tower Relocated to City Hall for Better Access

The Chiak Jonggak, a significant symbol of Wonju renowned for the 'Grateful Pheasant' folktale, has been moved from its previous location on a steep hill near the Chiak Gymnasium to a more accessible public park in front of the Wonju City Hall. The relocation, announced on July 31st, addresses long-standing concerns about the tower's difficult access, particularly for the elderly and children, and the safety risks posed by icy conditions during winter.

The bell tower was originally constructed in 1994 with a 100 million won donation from the late Hyundai Group honorary chairman Chung Ju-yung, following a community request to create a monument symbolizing the local folktale. The construction involved master craftsmen, including bell maker Won Kwang-sik and master carpenter Jeon Heung-soo, with the 현판 (plaque) bearing the calligraphy of former President Choi Kyu-ha, a native of Wonju.

Previously, the tower's steep location made it challenging to access during public events like ringing ceremonies on national holidays and New Year's Eve. Recognizing these issues, Wonju City consulted with relevant organizations, including the Korean Liberation Association and the Wonju Cultural Center, and received advice from the Gangwon Provincial Cultural Heritage Committee before proceeding with the relocation. The city anticipates that the move will not only enhance safety and accessibility but also transform the space from one used only for events into a daily cultural and recreational spot for all citizens.

Wonju Mayor Gu Ja-yeol expressed his commitment to making the Chiak Jonggak a central space that wishes for the well-being and development of the region and fosters citizen harmony. The relocation is expected to fulfill this vision by making the symbolic bell tower a more integral part of the community's daily life.
