Wood Ear Mushrooms Aid Weight Loss, Experts Reveal Selection Tips

Wood ear mushrooms, a common ingredient in many cuisines, are being highlighted for their potential to assist with weight loss. These fungi are rich in soluble dietary fiber, which plays a crucial role in the digestive process and satiety.

According to nutritionist Chen Yiting, the soluble fiber in wood ear mushrooms undergoes fermentation by gut bacteria. This process generates short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which in turn stimulate the secretion of GLP-1. This naturally occurring hormone is known to have weight-reducing effects, offering an alternative for individuals who cannot use weight-loss injections.

The Council of Agriculture (COA) in Taiwan distinguishes between two main types of wood ear mushrooms: Mao Mu Er (hairy wood ear) and Hei Mu Er (black wood ear). Mao Mu Er, primarily grown in Taiwan, is larger with a chewier texture. Hei Mu Er, also known as Sichuan fungus, is smaller, rounder, and has a smoother, crisper texture, often sold as dried imports.

When choosing fresh wood ear mushrooms, consumers should look for produce that is dark in color with a natural sheen. The texture should feel firm and elastic, and there should be no sourness or unusual odors. For dried varieties, the mushrooms should appear light and dry, with uniform size. Avoid products that are excessively broken, unnaturally dark, or show signs of moisture or off-smells, as these indicate lower quality.
