Working pensioners in Romania can increase their pensions: Required documents and where to apply

Romanian old-age pensioners who continue working can ask for their pensions to be recalculated to reflect contribution periods completed after retirement.

Law No. 360/2023 on the public pension system allows pensioners to request the addition of periods worked after they entered retirement, provided social insurance contributions were due for that activity. The recalculation does not happen automatically. The pensioner must submit an application to the relevant pension office.

The National Public Pension House, or CNPP, lists a recalculation request and an identity document as the required documents. For work periods after April 1, 2001, applicants generally do not need to provide employment certificates. The information should already appear in the CNPP database through employers’ nominal insurance declarations.

That makes accurate reporting by the employer important for people who continue to work. If certain periods or earnings do not appear in the pension office’s records and could affect pension rights, officials may request additional supporting documents.

The application must go to the territorial pension office managing the applicant’s pension. The pensioner can continue working while applying and can request recognition of contributions accumulated up to that point. The law permits one recalculation request per calendar year, so applicants do not need to file a new request after every month or period worked. The resulting rights begin in the month after the application is registered.
